As Bangaloreans, we are passionate lovers of coffee, after all who can resist the heavenly aromatic filter coffee. Here are some less known facts about our very own kaapi.
• Goats actually discovered the coffee plant. Their shepherd noticed that they were getting very hyper; therefore, one day, he followed their every move, and found out that they were eating a strange berry that was keeping them awake all day and night.
• There are two species of coffee plants: Arabica and Robusta
• 75% of the world’s coffee comes from the Coffee Arabica plant.
• Coffee has been used as a beverage for over 700 years.
• Coffee grown at higher elevations i.e. 4000 ft and above are known to possess a distinct flavour and acidity in cup due to slower development of beans. The coffees are of high quality with dense beans.
• Espresso Coffee has just one third of the caffeine content of ordinary coffee.
• Drink your fresh coffee right away for the best flavour. Coffee will break down quickly if left on a heat source and coffee should never be reheated or micro waved since both of these break down the coffee flavour.
• Coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world. (Oil is First)
• Black coffee with no sugar has no calories.
• Basically coffee berries are picked, processed (flesh removed from around the coffee beans), and then they're dried (more of that process below). The seeds are then roasted at temperatures around 200°C (392°F), during which the sugars in the bean caramelize, the bean changes color, and the true flavor of that delicious coffee develops.
• Scientists say that 11am is the perfect time for a cup of coffee.
• India exports coffee to more than 45 countries.
• Approximately fifty thousand metric tons of coffee is exported to Italy every year who is our top coffee importer.
• Karnataka is the largest producer of coffee in India and about 50% of Karnataka’s produce comes from Coorg.
