Kill that Depression before it kills you

DON'T JUST STAND THERE, DO SOMETHING
Sulking in a corner is the worst thing you want to do when you are down and depressed.
The fastest way to get out of your head is to put it in a new project. Get into your hobby. Make yourself useful. Take a course in something you haven’t tried till date or try a new sport. It's refreshing and you may stumble upon something that will last you a lifetime.

ACCEPT THINGS YOU CAN’T CHANGE.
There are things you can do and there are things you can't do. Apart from the depressing economy, there is the fuel price increase, inflation, poverty, climate change and so on. If you can fix this then go ahead and do it. If not then realize there are things you have to accept and feeling depressed and miserable over something you have no control on is not going to make your situation better.

AVOID NEGETIVE PEOPLE.
When you are feeling down make sure you find the right people you want to be with. Learn to identify the people who brighten up the room by being there and the people who brighten up the room by leaving it. Positive people offer encouragement and positive people are usually tough people who have outlasted tough times. Learn a thing or two from them. It will do wonders to your mood.

SWEAT IT OUT.
Take out your running shoes and ipod and head out to channel your energy into worthwhile exercise. Hit the treadmill If the outdoor are not your kind. Running will help you clear your mind and develop more creative thoughts. When you exercise your mind produces endorphins which are our body's natural opiate that enables us to face pain and unpleasant circumstances. When your body is weak your problems become larger than life so make sure you make yourself healthy and you keep yourself healthy all the time.

ENTER INTO HEALTHY DISTRACTIONS
Distractions take their minds off the reason for your depression and depression itself. Identify what distracts you the most, crossword puzzles, Sudoku, music, books, crafts, cleaning, whatever it is, identify it and go for it.
Playing with my dogs and taking care of them would be a good distraction too. Research has proved that walking the dog or caring you pets is therapy enough for pet lovers.
But beware, watching TV and viewing all those deep dramatic soap operas may plunge you into deeper depths of depression. Depression is a killer. You will not be able to function at your best if you are constantly imprisoned in depression.

BUILD A STRONG SUPPORT SYSTEM
In leadership training programs they stress on the importance of having a mentor or the need to be mentoring someone. Friendship is the greatest support system in the world. Make sure you have friends who are firm and honest enough to tell you not just the things you want to hear but the things you need to hear. Friends keep you on track, share your burdens and celebrate your victories. It's a great depression buster just to have people there for you when you need it most.

KEEP A HAPPINESS JOURNAL
Gift yourself a beautiful book and convert it into a happiness journal. Record the experiences that have made you happy day after day. This precious book will turn out to be your saviour angel on depressing days. Reading through your own hand written book will make the problem too tiny a thing in front of your good times.
