Synopsis
A comedy of manners, an apt description of the English play The Constant Wife, was written by Somerset Maugham in 1926. The witty- stimulating- daring comedy had all the potentials to become Simantini in 2011.
The play revolves around Kaninika, a calm and intelligent home maker, and her husband’s extra-marital relationship with her friend Rangeela, who lights up many a male heart by her pretty face and coquettish airs. The play starts with a gradual unfolding recognition of this scandalous adultery which Kaninika’s sister angrily disapproves of while her mother seems to accept for the sake of preserving Kaninika’s marriage and saving her from social stigma.
In this backdrop, the drama takes a different turn with the emergence of Kaninika’s former suitor after 15 long years. The theatrical peak is reached with the sudden appearance of Rangeela’s workaholic, indulgent, but jealous husband revealing the infidelity in front of everybody. How will witty and modern Kaninika react to this revelation of the truth? Will she seek legal recourse? Can the ardent love from her former suitor indulge her in changing the life? The climax of the play holds the answers to these intriguing questions.
